Troubleshooting

Blocked sinks and slow drains

Water draining slowly or standing in the sink is usually caused by a build-up in the waste pipe, and often can be cleared without harsh chemicals.

Safe checks you can do

  • Remove and clean the sink plug hole cover and clear any hair or debris you can reach.
  • Try hot water and a small amount of washing-up liquid before reaching for chemical drain cleaners.
  • Check whether only one fitting is slow (local blockage) or several at once (a deeper blockage in the shared waste run).
  • Never mix different drain chemicals; they can react and damage pipework.

Likely causes

  • Fat, food waste and soap scum building up in the trap or waste pipe.
  • Hair and soap collecting in bath and shower wastes.
  • Wet wipes or hygiene products lodged further down the pipe run.
  • An outside gully or drain blocked with leaves or garden debris.

When to call Tignite

If the sink still drains slowly after clearing the trap, if more than one fitting is affected, or you smell sewage, call us. We carry proper drain clearance equipment and can check the pipework for damage rather than just moving the blockage along.
