Troubleshooting

Heating making unusual noises

Banging, gurgling, humming or whistling from the boiler or radiators is your heating telling you something. Some noises are harmless, some are not.

Safe checks you can do

  • Note when the noise happens: on start-up, while running, or when the hot tap opens.
  • Check the boiler pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar.
  • Bleed any radiators that are gurgling, then re-check the pressure.
  • Listen for whether the noise comes from the boiler itself or the pipework and radiators.

Likely causes

  • Air in the system, causing gurgling and knocking in radiators and pipes.
  • Kettling: limescale on the boiler heat exchanger causing rumbling or boiling sounds.
  • A failing pump that hums, grinds or makes the system noisy.
  • Loose pipework clipping that bangs as pipes expand and contract.

When to call Tignite

Kettling, grinding or any noise from inside the boiler casing should be looked at promptly; running a boiler in that state can turn a small part failure into a full breakdown. We will trace the noise and quote before any work.
